Roundtable with Private Healthcare Sector - Future Strategies for Developing a Common Interoperable Electronic Health Record System in Hong Kong

To ascertain the needs of health services providers and define possible solutions to jump-start eHealth adoption in the private sector, a roundtable entitled ˇ§Future Strategies for Developing a Common Interoperable Electronic Health Record System in Hong Kongˇ¨ was organized by the eHealth Consortium on March 27, 2007 at the headquarters of the Hong Kong Medical Association in Wanchai.  Dr. Winnie Tang, Chairman of Steering Committee of the eHealth Consortium, hosted the roundtable and invited representatives from private hospitals, medical associations and professionals in health informatics to participate in the event.

Thanks to Dr. Wong Chun-por, Co-chairman of Executive Committee, and Dr. Elizabeth Quat, Member of Advisory Committee and Ex-President of the Internet Professional Association (iProA), who respectively served as the moderators of the two sessions, ˇ§To identify Urgent Requirements and Shortcomings in Healthcare IT Systems in the Private Sectorˇ¨ and ˇ§To Suggest Ways to Speed Up Development of eHealth in Private Sectorˇ¨. It was the first time that doctors from the private sector gathered for a discussion of the issues involved in eHealth adoption. The participants were eager to exchange their experiences in the application of information technology in their professional practice and examined the potential challenges in the implementation of eHealth in the private sector.

The roundtable was concluded with a consensus that an interoperable platform for medical information will enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of healthcare services. It serves as the first and important step for the private sector of medical services to work together in the eHealth initiatives.
