Nansha Science & Technology Forum: Advanced Manufacturing

Jointly Organized by Fok Ying Tung Foundation, The Hong Kong University of Science & Technology (HKUST) and Guangzhou Science & Technology Bureau, the sixth session of the Nansha Science & Technology Forum (Theme: Key Technology Issues of Social-Economic Development) - "Advanced Manufacturing" will be held on 30-31 March 2007 at Nansha, Guangzhou, China.

For the Nansha Science & Technology Forum contains 10 sessions throughout 2006-2007 with different foci on Information Technology, Energy, Healthcare, Environment, Globalization, Materials, Manufacture, Logistics, Natural Disaster and Population.

China has emerged as a major manufacturing center of the world. The rapid transformation has been considered a significant change in modern history. It has brought wealth to a nation that was for decades based on agriculture, and improved quality of life for average citizen. In the mean time, it also introduced challenges in environment, energy, resource utilization, social and distribution issues. These challenges are also monumental; some of them have been addressed in the previous sessions in the Nansha Science & Technology Forum.

It has been recognized that China should not be just a factory for the world, or becoming a gigantic manufacturing country.  Instead, China should be a high value added, strong country in manufacturing. The difference lies in the ability to upgrade the manufacturing industry in both technology and management. Labor intensive and low value added production serves China well to prime the industrial growth engine. With the GDP per capita now at 1000 USD level, China should explore new ways to upgrade the industry, increase added value and reduce resource consumption per GDP dollar growth.

Essentially, there are a number of dimensions to increase the added-value. These include, namely: product design, improved quality and reliability, innovative product and process technology, better response to the market needs and well integrated value chain. To this end, we choose to have “Upgrading the manufacturing industry” as the theme of this specific Forum. To tackle this multi-facet issue, we pulled together experts from industry, government and academic sectors. From their rich experience, they will share different perspectives in public policy, industry development trend, value chain migration, productivity improvement through automation, branding and manufacturing cluster formation in China. We look forward to an intensive and lively discussion on these issues with specific relevance to the manufacturing industries in the Pearl River Delta.
