Events ¡@ Nansha Science & Technology Forum: Advanced Materials and Nanotechnology ¡@ Jointly Organized by Fok Ying Tung Foundation, The Hong Kong University of Science & Technology (HKUST) and Guangzhou Science & Technology Bureau, the sixth session of the Nansha Science & Technology Forum (Theme: Key Technology Issues of Social-Economic Development) - "Advanced Materials and Nanotechnology" will be held on 26 January 2007 at Nansha, Guangzhou, China. ¡@ Materials are the main building block for most physical engineering systems. A majority of industrial products start with certain fundamental materials science and heavily depend on the sophistication of materials-related engineering and technologies. Advanced materials refer to those emerging engineering material systems with superior performance and specific features. Numerous industrial applications require various kinds of advanced materials in order to achieve intended functions.
In the past decade, the Pearl River Delta (PRD) has become an important manufacturing center in the world. Major industrial sectors represented in the greater PRD region include microelectronics, information, automotive, textile and apparel, and plastic products. Tens of thousands of companies have been established since the turn of the new century. There are huge demands for advanced materials and material processing technology in order to maintain the competitiveness of regional industries in the global markets.
The advent of nanotechnology in the recent years has broadened the horizon of materials science and engineering to a new frontier. New materials are invented frequently and innovative applications are introduced on a regular basis worldwide. There is no doubt that advanced materials and nanotechnologies have become the essential elements for the elevation of industries in the greater PRD region. ¡@ The sixth session of the Forum - "Advanced Materials and Nanotechnology" will focus on the recent development and emerging trends in advanced materials and nanotechnologies. The aspects of both fundamental science and industrial applications will be covered. In addition to the technical presentations by distinguished speakers, a panel session will be conducted to discuss several current materials technology issues and developments relevant to the PRD. Emphases will be placed on enhancing the competitiveness of relevant industries in the region using advanced materials and nanotechnologies
