Joint Forum: “Risks in Sensitive Information Handling and
Disaster Recovery due to recent disasters”
In the wake of recent disasters, notably the triple catastrophe in Japan arising from earthquake, tsunami and eventual leakage of radiation from its nuclear plants, many critical operations, data centres and senior corporate executives have been moved to overseas locations, including Hong Kong for business continuity purposes. Although business operations could be effectively recovered, the process of switch-over of IT and operations during disaster recovery may put the data at risk, including customers’ personal data. If data protection measures have not been sufficiently managed upon disaster, enterprises may suffer from various losses such as exposing customer data, losing intellectual property, violating compliances obligations, as well as causing reputational damages.
This forum aims to raise awareness and to find ways to address potential problems in preserving data privacy while maintaining business continuity during disaster.
